With Professor Belarie Zatzman
Please join us for a presentation exploring a replica artifact of The Heart from Auschwitz, led by Professor Belarie Zatzman. The lesson will be experiential; it will be interactive and dialogue-based, centred on an analysis of the material artifact.
The Heart from Auschwitz is a heart-shaped booklet that is a birthday card given to Fania Fainer on December 12th, 1944, when she turned 20 years old in Auschwitz. The card was made by Zlatka Pitluk (nee Snajderhauz) with materials found in the camp. She passed it on to eighteen other women imprisoned in Auschwitz, where they wrote wishes and messages of hope in Polish, Hebrew, German and French. The creation of this card was an act of resistance, for which the women would have faced beating or death.
Professor Belarie Zatzman is a Professor of Theatre Studies at York University. Her research focuses on issues of history, identity and memory in Drama and Arts Education. She specializes in exploring Holocaust Education through the Fine Arts.
