The Azrieli Foundation established their Series of Holocaust Survivor Memoirs to collect, preserve and share the stories written by survivors of the 20th century Nazi genocide of the Jews of Europe who later made their way to Canada. The memoirs are distributed free-of-charge to libraries, educational institutions and are also available for free download from the Azrieli website.
The Neuberger hosted its first Gedenkdiener, or Holocaust Memorial Intern in 2010. Raffael Stuhlpfarrer, a young student from Graz, interned at the Centre from October 2010 – January 2011. Currently, the Centre is proud to host Aron Coman-Mikó as our 2012 Gedenkdiener.
The Austrian Holocaust Memorial Service (Gedenkdienst) is an independent alternative to Austria's compulsory national military service. Its participants serve at major Holocaust institutions. The first participant started in 1992 at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum. Since then, over 400 Austrian Holocaust Memorial Servants have been working with major Holocaust memorial institutions in 23 countries worldwide. The intent of the AHMS is to recognize Austria's part of the collective responsibility for the Holocaust. Together with Hillel Canada, the Neuberger is proud to welcome future Gedenkdiener interns.
Aron Coman-Mikó is currently completing his community service with the Sarah and Chaim Neuberger Holocaust Education Centre as part of the Austrian Service Abroad organization.
Born not far from Salzburg, Austria, and living in Seewalchen, Aron chose civil service focusing on Holocaust Memorial Service activities as an alternative to compulsory Austrian military service. He spent six months at the Galicia Jewish Museum in Kraków, Poland, and will be in Toronto until the end of July 2012. Aron looks forward to working with students and educators during his time in Canada.
Aron is fluent in German, English, Hungarian and French and is working towards a degree in Political Science and History.
